Please note: This week's program is an encore presentation of the first episode of Inside Classical Guitar, first aired on May 6, 2013, with special guest Christopher Parkening! It aired prior to our 50th Anniversary Celebration on June 9 of that year. We play some of the legenday recordings of this best-known American guitarist, converse about his relationship to Andres Segovia, his devotion to the classical guitar, and find out the reasons for his decision to retire from the concert stage.
Highlights: What has 25 strings and flies? The Quaternaglia Guitar Quartet-- composed of native Brazilian guitarists Chrystian Dozza, Fabio Ramazzina, Thiago Abdalla and Sidney Molina. One of the quartet plays a 7-stringed instrument, making 5 in all, and their fingers certainly do fly! On this show we'll hear lots of exciting Brazilan composers of recent vintage.
Highlights: Hear some of the thirty new compositions inspired and commissioned by Fulbright winning scholarship guitarist Adam Levin in his travels to Spain. New compositions by Eduardo Morales-Caso, Salvador Brotons, Leonardo Balada, Octavio Vazquez, and David del Puerto.
Highlights: Program featuring guitarist John McLaughlin: Duos for Guitar & Piano: Two Sisters; Until Such Time; Brise de Coeur with Katia Labeque, piano; and the Concerto for Guitar & Orchestra, “The Mediterranean” with Michael Tilson Thomas conducting the London Symphony Orchestra.
Highlights: Muisc for two guitars by the Hugarian romantic composer Johannn Kaspar Mertz (c.1840–1856). Performances by Raphaella Smits and Adrian Brogna, and Johannes Moller with Laura Fraticelli.
Highlights: A show featuring the phenomenal Brasil Guitar Duo, João Luiz and Douglas Lora. Program includes music from Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco: The Well-Tempered Guitar: 24 Preludes and Fugues; Douglas Lora: Brazilian Fugues: Cantiga; Baião; and Marlos Nobre: Ciclos Nordestinos: I. Samba Matuto; IV. Priana; V. Martelo. Also from Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco: Sonata Canonica, op. 196.
Highlights: We feature the phenomenal Chinese guitarist Xuefei Yang as she performs music of Isaac Albeniz. Highlights: Announcing and previewing the performers headlining the second half of the Guitar Society's 2015-16 Season! Performances by Polish guitarist Lukasz Kuropaczewski, Chinese guitarist Xuefei Yang, and the bandoneon and guitar duo of Italian musicians Giampaolo Bandini and Cesare Chiacchiaretta.
